About TestNihongo
TestNihongo is a free practice site for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), starting with the beginner levels N5 and N4. It is built for self-learners who want quick, focused practice in the browser — no sign-up, no app to install, and no paywall.
What you can do here
- Practice by section — vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening, with instant feedback and an English explanation for every question.
- Timed mock exams — a mixed set of questions under a countdown timer, scored against the official JLPT passing lines (N5: 80/180, N4: 90/180). Scores here are estimates, not official scaled scores.
- Listening with audio — listening scripts are read aloud using your device's Japanese text-to-speech voice, so practice costs nothing and works anywhere.
- Wrong Book — questions you miss are saved in your own browser so you can retry them later. Nothing is uploaded; there are no accounts.
How the questions are made
Every question on TestNihongo is written specifically for this site, following the topic areas, vocabulary range and grammar patterns of each JLPT level. We do not copy official past papers or textbook exercises. Explanations are written in plain English so you can see why an answer is correct, not just which one it is.
The question bank is growing steadily toward the full practice sets planned for each level, and an N3 section is on the roadmap.
Who runs this site
TestNihongo is a small independent project created by a Japanese-language enthusiast to test a simple idea: high-quality exam practice should be free, fast and available without registration. The site is supported by advertising, which is why it can stay free.
Not an official site
TestNihongo is an independent practice site and is not affiliated with the Japan Foundation or Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), the organisations that administer the JLPT. "JLPT" is used on this site only to describe the exam our practice prepares you for. For exam dates, fees and registration, always check the official site at jlpt.jp.
