JLPT N5 and N4 practice tests, free and online

Preparing for the JLPT N5 or JLPT N4? TestNihongo lets you practise the real exam sections — vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening — with original questions written for learners at each level. In practice mode you see the correct answer and a short English explanation after every question, so each mistake turns into a review point. In mock exam mode you get 20 questions drawn at random under a timer, scored against the official passing lines (N5: 80/180, N4: 90/180).

Which level should you take? N5 covers roughly 800 basic words and about 100 kanji — the level of everyday greetings, classroom Japanese and simple signs. N4 adds up to about 1,500 words and 300 kanji and asks you to follow short conversations and texts about daily life. If you are not sure, start with an N5 practice set: if you score above 80% comfortably, move up to N4. Read more on our About page, including how the questions are written.

A simple plan until exam day: ① practise one section a day, ② redo everything in your Wrong Book at the weekend, ③ take one timed mock exam each week and watch your section scores, not just the total. Consistency beats cramming — 20 focused minutes a day is enough to move an N5 or N4 score.
